Gold Up After A Dip Near $1700

Gold futures surged back in the Asia session today after falling near $1700 levels on Friday a near term support level for the commodity. This week we may see some gains in the metal towards $1760 levels.

Broad gains for Asia on Monday followed news that Greece approved a package of austerity measures which international backers had demanded before they will sign off on 130 billion euros ($176.6 billion) of fresh aid.

The vote came amid violent protests in Athens against the latest round of deep spending cuts and public-sector job layoffs. Without the bailout - the second in two years - Greece would have been insolvent and would be forced to default on its debt next month when it needs to redeem €14.5bn of loans.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for April delivery is up $4 at $ 1730 levels. It settled at $1,723.95 a troy ounce on Friday, shedding 0.54% over the week, the second consecutive weekly decline.

Gold prices came off their lows after the CME Group, operator of the Comex reduced the amount of cash that traders must deposit for speculative positions by 12% to USD10,125. The new rates will be effective after the close of trading Monday, the company said in a statement.

MCX Benchmark gold futures may start today's session near Rs. 28300 levels with supports near Rs. 28200 levels.

This week, euro zone finance ministers are expected to meet on Tuesday to discuss Greece's bailout deal, which should lead to a final approval by the country's international lenders, including the International Monetary Fund and the ECB.

Investors will also be awaiting preliminary data on euro zone gross domestic product and U.S. retail sales, to assess the impact of the fiscal crisis in the euro zone on global growth.

Gold gains on Chinese buying

Gold strengthened on Monday in line with gains in shares and the euro after Greece's parliament finally approved a deeply unpopular austerity bill to secure a second bailout from the European Union and the IMF to avoid bankruptcy.

Physical buying from China also helped lift gold up $US6.10 an ounce to $US1725.49 in Asian afternoon trade. Bullion fell to $US1703.69 on Friday, its lowest since late January, as uncertainty over negotiations for Greece's bailout package prompted investors to cash in.

The Greek parliament approved on Monday the deeply unpopular austerity bill, while serious violence broke out on the streets of Athens and spread across the country.
The European Union meets on Wednesday to discuss giving a seal of approval for the new 130 billion-euro bailout.

"We are still looking for more measures out of Europe before we see a sustainable risk rally. Yes, perhaps it's good that we have a second bailout package and we are sure that at least we are not going to see Greece defaulting," said Ong Yi Ling, an analyst at Phillip Futures.

"I am looking for the resistance for gold at about $US1760. That will be the first resistance and the second one is at about the $US1800 level. For gold to break the $US1800 level, we need more measures, I would say."

US gold for April delivery rose $US3.20 to $US1728.50 an ounce.

Gold, typically a safe-haven asset, has been tracking the fortunes of the euro and stocks, with speculators selling the metal for cash to cover losses in other markets, especially during this period of uncertainty in Europe.

Asian shares and the euro gained modestly on Monday, relieved by the Greek parliament's passage of austerity measures which put the country a step closer to securing a much-needed bailout fund and avoiding a messy default.

"The Chinese guys are still buying. Whenever there is a dip in prices, they will buy. There's no change in their attitude," said a physical dealer in Hong Kong, who trades gold bars.

"They are still buying today, because I think the downside is limited for the time being. Sentiment has improved a little bit.’’

China has instructed its banks to embark on a huge roll-over of loans to local governments, the Financial Times reported, aiming to give itself more time to deal with a debt hangover from the global financial crisis.

Gold futures drop on weak Asian cues

Gold futures prices declined by Rs 114 to Rs 28,005 per 10 grams today largely due to a weakening trend overseas as strengthening dollar curbed the demand for the precious metal.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in April fell by Rs 114, or 0.41 per cent, to Rs 28,005 per 10 grams, with a business turnover of 1,667 lots.

Similarly, the metal for delivery in June lost Rs 113, or 0.40 per cent, to Rs 28,350 per 10 grams, with a trade volume of 77 lots.

A weakening trend in the Asian region after rating agency Moody's cut the ratings of six European nations, strengthening the dollar and reducing demand for alternative investments, mainly put pressure on the gold prices at futures trade here, analysts said.

Meanwhile, gold dropped by 0.40 per cent to $1,715.07 an ounce in early trade today in Singapore.

"Overnight demand was good as prices have come down... but now buying is stable," said a dealer with a state-run bullion importing bank.

Global gold edged lower, tracking a weaker euro, as wary investors focused on whether Greece will be able to convince Europe to grant a much-needed bailout and implement unpopular reforms.

Gold ends lower, logs third-straight session loss

Gold futures settled lower Tuesday to log their third losing session in a row, as pressure from a rally in the U.S. dollar outweighed support from weaker-than-expected U.S. retail sales and uncertainty over whether Greece will get a second bailout.

“We saw gold reacting to the dollar, rallying close to flat this morning, but as the dollar has rallied we’ve seen gold sell off,” said Tom Essaye, editor of the 7:00’s Report, a daily commentary on equity and commodity markets and the economy.

“Gold is displaying weakness and is struggling to break through resistance at $1,750 an ounce as traders hesitate to add to positions,” said Mark O’Byrne, executive director at GoldCore.

For now, gold prices are consolidating between $1,700 and $1,763 — and more consolidation at these levels may be necessary prior to gold challenging $1,800, said O’Byrne, in emailed comments.

“However, significant macroeconomic and geopolitical risk and the appalling fiscal state of most major industrial nations means that gold will almost certainly eke out further gains in all currencies in the coming months,” he said.

Investors remained cautious towards Greece ahead of a euro-zone finance ministers meeting to approve a second bailout for the nation. The meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday, but Reuters reported it may be delayed. Read more in Europe Markets.

Investors also continued to digest late Monday news of debt rating cuts by Moody’s Investors Service on Spain, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Malta. Moody’s also cut outlooks on France, Britain and Austria, but those countries retained their ratings for now. Read more on the downgrades.
