SYDNEY (MarketWatch) — Gold futures broke through the $1,700-an-ounce level in electronic trading on Friday, as optimism about a Greek debt deal helped spur buying across commodity and equity markets.

The rise puts the metal on track for a third session of gains as investors cheered an expected resolution a Greek debt-restructure that will likely clear the way for a second round of financial aid.

Reports late Thursday said Greece had completed a crucial debt-swap with private creditors, which would avert a straight bond default and a fresh wave of financial distress across the euro zone. Read more on Greece's debt deal.
